In little over a year, Beach Baby have built up a tightly-sealed, vaguely surreal world of their own. They met in the musically-rich halls of Goldsmiths – via Brighton, Dorset and Sheffield – where co-vocalists Ollie and Lawrence placed an advert in halls looking to flesh out their then-folk-driven duo. Joined by drummer Shep and bassist Kit, the band’s songs – often transatlantic in sound – touch frequently on those less-glamorous uncertainties of post-campus life: apathy, escapism, and the distance between your own future and the iconic bands or movies you grew up on.
What a difference, then, twelve months can make: largely DIY, Beach Baby have picked up across-the-board support at Radio 1, Beats 1, 6Music and Radio X, topped Hype Machine, eclipsed 1 million streams on Spotify, and played to audiences around the UK, Europe and US. Currently recording their debut album, ‘Lost Soul’ suggests Beach Baby are moving closer to their moment in the sun.
