About The Academic
THE ACADEMIC ANNOUNCE ALBUM NO.3, ‘ I’M NOT CRYING, YOU ARE’
‘A BAND ALL GROWN UP AND GLORIOUSLY UNAPOLOGETIC’
The announcement follows the recent release of Keeping Up Appearances The track marked the beginning of a new chapter for the band, offering the first taste of a record that sees The Academic expand their songwriting ambitions while retaining the energy and immediacy that has defined them.
There’s a point in a band’s life when ambition stops sounding like ambition and simply becomes instinct. For The Academic, ‘ I’m Not Crying You Are’ is that record’ a widescreen, deeply melodic album that finds the Irish indie-rock band sounding more assured, more emotionally open, and more timeless than ever.
Recorded in Dublin at Hellfire Studios, with Pete Robertson, whose production credits include The Vaccines and Beabadoobee, Clairo, the album captures The Academic at their most expansive without losing the directness that has always defined them. These are songs built around great melodies and sharp emotional detail, but there’s something bigger at work too a sense that the band are reaching beyond the moment and making music with the kind of staying power that reveals itself slowly.
Lead singer Craig Fitztgerald says “I think with this record we wanted to get closer to the kind of albums that made us fall in love with music in the first place. There’s a real love of melody and arrangement in it, and I think you can hear some of that Beatles instinct for taking a song somewhere unexpected. We were also listening to a lot of Dylan and Lou Reed while making this record and were inspired by the honest storytelling and how they both could look at everyday life without dressing it up or trying to make it more sentimental than it needed to be.
But we never wanted to make a record that sounded like a collection of our influences. Those artists were part of the language we were speaking while we were making it, but the songs are very much ours. I think there’s something quite raw and honest about this album, and we’ve let the imperfections stay in there. That feels like a big part of who we are as a band now.”
Elsewhere, the band’s indie-rock DNA remains unmistakable. Guitars that lift and propel, choruses built to be shouted back, and the particular tension between melancholy and exhilaration that has become their own.
But the defining quality of the album is its maturity. “I’m Not Crying, You Are “ doesn’t chase youthfulness or try to manufacture significance. It sounds like a band comfortable enough in its own skin to let the songs do the talking. The heartbreak is more complicated, the joy feels harder won, and the emotional world is less black-and-white. There is humour alongside vulnerability, confidence alongside uncertainty, and a sense of looking back while still moving forward.
The Academic have always understood the power of a melody. On ‘I’m Not Crying, You Are’ they understand something else, how to make those melodies last.
‘I’m Not Crying, You Are’ is released January 22nd and is available for pre-order now.
