SUMMARY:The Academic at Scala - Friday 16th April 2027 - 6:30 pm until 9:45
  pm
DESCRIPTION:THE ACADEMIC ANNOUNCE ALBUM NO.3\, ‘ I’M NOT CRYING\, YOU A
RE’\n\n‘A BAND ALL GROWN UP AND GLORIOUSLY UNAPOLOGETIC’\n\nThe anno
uncement follows the recent release of Keeping Up Appearances The track ma
rked the beginning of a new chapter for the band\, offering the first tast
e of a record that sees The Academic expand their songwriting ambitions wh
ile retaining the energy and immediacy that has defined them.\n\nThere’s
a point in a band’s life when ambition stops sounding like ambition and
simply becomes instinct. For The Academic\, ‘ I’m Not Crying You Are
’ is that record’ a widescreen\, deeply melodic album that finds the I
rish indie-rock band sounding more assured\, more emotionally open\, and m
ore timeless than ever.\n\nRecorded in Dublin at Hellfire Studios\, with P
ete Robertson\, whose production credits include The Vaccines and Beabadoo
bee\, Clairo\, the album captures The Academic at their most expansive wit
hout losing the directness that has always defined them. These are songs b
uilt around great melodies and sharp emotional detail\, but there’s some
thing bigger at work too a sense that the band are reaching beyond the mom
ent and making music with the kind of staying power that reveals itself sl
owly.\n\nLead singer Craig Fitztgerald says “I think with this record we
wanted to get closer to the kind of albums that made us fall in love with
music in the first place. There’s a real love of melody and arrangement
in it\, and I think you can hear some of that Beatles instinct for taking
a song somewhere unexpected. We were also listening to a lot of Dylan and
Lou Reed while making this record and were inspired by the honest storyte
lling and how they both could look at everyday life without dressing it up
or trying to make it more sentimental than it needed to be.\n\nBut we nev
er wanted to make a record that sounded like a collection of our influence
 s. Those artists were part of the language we were speaking while we were
making it\, but the songs are very much ours. I think there’s something
quite raw and honest about this album\, and we’ve let the imperfections
stay in there. That feels like a big part of who we are as a band now.”\
 n\nElsewhere\, the band’s indie-rock DNA remains unmistakable. Guitars t
hat lift and propel\, choruses built to be shouted back\, and the particul
ar tension between melancholy and exhilaration that has become their own.\
n\nBut the defining quality of the album is its maturity. “I’m Not Cry
ing\, You Are “ doesn’t chase youthfulness or try to manufacture signi
ficance. It sounds like a band comfortable enough in its own skin to let t
he songs do the talking. The heartbreak is more complicated\, the joy feel
s harder won\, and the emotional world is less black-and-white. There is h
 umour alongside vulnerability\, confidence alongside uncertainty\, and a s
ense of looking back while still moving forward.\n\nThe Academic have alwa
ys understood the power of a melody. On ‘I’m Not Crying\, You Are’ t
hey understand something else\, how to make those melodies last.\n\n‘I
’m Not Crying\, You Are’ is released January 22nd and is available for
  pre-order now.
