Desperate Journalist: The ‘Grow Up’ album sees Desperate Journalist building on the sublimely tetchy moodswings of their self-titled debut and the intense interim ‘Good Luck’ EP by adding a fresh sonic sheen to their old school indie stroppings. This means that they sound meatier and bolder, yet are still infused with a keen pop sensibility which ensures that ‘Grow Up’ contains at least five possible singles, including the BBC 6 Music radio smashes ‘Hollow’ and ‘Resolution’.

Asylums have created a snapshot of a band and country in a state of change. They may have killer pop hooks, but there’s no bubblegum here – songs about the death of high street retail, austerity, and rampant consumerism sit cheek by jowl next to tales of sex, outsider culture, and gender equality. With a social media blackout for the first three singles, ‘Killer Brain Waves’ is the culmination of a two year slow burn – all this in the time that has seen other bands get themselves signed and disappear off the face of the Earth. Purs hail from Australia, Sweden and the UK and create a heady mix of shoegaze, post-rock, psych and garage which has drawn comparisons with Lush, The Dandy Warhols and The Brian Jonestown Massacre. Having released their ‘Girl In Love’ single on cassette on Blak Hand Records late in 2016 Purs are now working on suitably psychrocking material for a debut album later this year.
