As the UK’s No.1 Hip-Hop party The Doctor’s Orders could not let Hip-Hop’s 40th anniversary pass without marking the occasion in real style with a phenomenal line up of talent tracking the genre’s progression from Bronx block parties to the most influential cultural movement of the 20th Century and beyond.
Representing for the Hip-Hop’s birth and early days we have Afrika Bambaataa, marking Hip-Hop’s 90’s Golden age and progression to today’s boom-bap revival we have The Alchemist. Marking his mark for Today’s Hip-Hop scene we have Black Milk performing with his live band onstage at 11pm and signalling the path for Hip-Hop’s future we have the phenomenal Tall Black Guy.
Afrika Bambaataa is considered ‘The Godfather of Hip-Hop’. Through establishing the Universal Zulu Nation with it’s moto of ‘Peace, Unity, Love and Having Fun’ he not only helped calm New York’s gang violence of the late 70’s & Early 80’s but set the blueprint for Hip-Hop’s elements of DJing, MCing, Grafiti and B-Boying for generations to come.
Having unearthed many of Hip-Hop’s original breaks & beats Afrika Bambaataa went on to play a huge part in creating the Electro sound of the 80’s and therefore in turn the house & dance music that followed. He is rightly thought of not only one of the most influential people in Hip-Hop but of all dance music. Tonight he spins an exclusive Hip-Hop / Funk set for what is sure to be another packed Scala.
As one half of The Whooliganz, The Alchemist first release was in 1993 on Tommy Boy Records during Hip-Hop’s ‘Golden Age’. Under the guidance of Soul Assasins’ DJ Muggs & B-Real he focussed on production making his mark through tracks for Dilated Peoples & Mobb Deep. In his 20 year career since as one of the most respected and in demand producers he’s worked with everyone from Nas to Snoop Dogg, released 11 full length solo albums and full length collaboration albums with the hottest MCs right now including Action Bronson, Moc Marciano, Fashawn & Curren$y. All the while his skills on the turntables have seen him touring as Eminem’s DJ and rocking parties around the world including two previous parties with The Doctor’s Orders.
One of the most respected & exciting producer / MCs in the Hip-Hop right now is Detroit’s Black Milk. Following the city’s musical traditions, laid down by Motown through his legendary late mentor James ‘J-Dilla’ Yancey, his distinctive soul drenched sound has won fans around the globe especially among The Doctor’s Orders faithful for whom this will be will be his 5th performance. This time around he is rocking with his full 5 piece live band producing an experience not to be missed (onstage 11pm).
Representing the future of the future sound of Hip-Hop we have the exciting talent of Tall Black Guy. Few producers have caused such a stir as this man in recent years. His re-edit work on soundcloud has become hugely popular and seen him make firm fans of the likes of Gilles Peterson, Benji B and all of us at The Doctor’s Orders. Make sure you do not miss this early performance from one of the genre’s rising stars.
As always the party starts and stops with The Doctor’s Orders phenomenal residents. Headed and hand picked by the man with the plan Spin Doctor, Chris P Cuts & Mo Fingaz will be spinning all manner of Hip-Hop while on mic duties as ever is the cheeky chappy MC Prankster.
