Joanna Gruesome set to take on Scala with Two New Members

Cardiff noise pop group Joanna Gruesome are dropping into Scala as part of their biggest UK tour to date, in support of their critically acclaimed second album Peanut Butter, out now on Fortuna POP!

The tour marks the departure of vocalist Alanna Mcardle from the band and the debut of new members Kate and Roxy, something songwriter/guitarist Owen Williams is very excited about.

“We’re really pleased to be joined by two amazing and inspiring women, Kate (of feminist/queer punks Pennycress) on melodic vocals, shouting, screaming and noise equipment and Roxy (of Two White Cranes, Grubs, formerly Trust Fund and misandrist power trio TOWEL) on melodic vocals and keyboard. We met them both in an occult bookshop.”

Kate and Roxy’s first appearance as part of Joanna Gruesome came at a hastily arranged secret show at The Shacklewell Arms, followed mere days later by their biggest show to date at Denmark’s massive Roskilde Festival, a baptism of fire if ever there was, as Roxy recounts: “Joining Joanna Gruesome has been nuts. The first show I played with them was in front of all my friends and that was a laugh and then the second one was at bloody Roskilde with thousands of Danish strangers but that was a right laugh too. It’s definitely really nice joining a band that you’re already a fan of; basically it’s like that Bruce Springsteen video where the rest of the band are Bruce Springsteen and I am Courtney Cox. Living the dream.”

With the two new members now fully integrated Owen is confident that it’s business as usual for the Welsh Music Award winners.

“We have consulted experts and have been informed we are a ‘high quality rock n roll group who will still be playing songs from the records ‘Weird Sister’ and ‘Peanut Butter’. We’re super excited about what Roxy & Kate will add to the songs I’ve written recently and we will continue our mission to make pop songs as unlistenable as possible.”

Come along to Scala on Tuesday 22nd September to see for yourself. Support comes from Primetime and King Of Cats.
