‘What Are We Fighting For’ is the fifth album from the original Dodgy line-up – Nigel Clark, Mathew Priest and Andy Miller – and the first of new material since their widely lauded comeback reunion album, ‘Stand Upright In A Cool Place’. It is also the first album to feature relatively new member Stu Thoy on bass and vibes, who joined the band to help them tour the last album and has managed to hang on in there ever since, and their first for new label Cherry Red Records.
Self-produced and mixed in Worcestershire, the 10 track album was produced by Nigel Clark, with additional production from the band and recorded and engineered by Dave ‘Done’ Draper at Tower Studios, Pershore UK.
Now, four years on from the reunion album, Dodgy are finally ready to release their new album ‘What Are We Fighting For’, featuring the amazing Vanessa Wilson who brings the LOVE on four of the tracks. The band had known Vanessa from the fantastic Ultrasound for a good few year’s and indeed Math and Andy had been in a Northern Soul band with her, The Soulwinners. One of the tracks especially, ‘What Are We Fighting For’ benefitted from Vanessa’s input and along with ‘You Give Drugs A Bad Name’ became the central tracks of album.
Influenced by July, Harmonium and Can and Nigel’s new found love of bands like Atlas Sound and White Fence, Dodgy believe ‘What Are We Fighting For’ is their best ever record, but they’re not the only ones – Cenzo Townshend (Florence, U2, Primal Scream etc) who worked with Dodgy on their first record, heard the demos and demanded to mix some tracks. Similarly, Rob Da Bank heard two tracks and offered Dodgy a slot on the Mainstage at Bestival in September 2015.
Dodgy’s 2012 comeback album ‘Stand Upright In A Cool Place’, was a long time coming, 15 years to be precise since the double platinum selling ‘Free Peace Sweet’. From the rave reviews and many media plaudits that were heaped upon ‘Stand Upright….’ it seemed that the original line up of the band had done the impossible – to reform and make a contemporary and relevant album that surpassed their previous work. Testament indeed to the unique chemistry and overflowing creativity of Nigel Clark, Andy Miller and Mathew Priest and mixer Matt Pence. Creating a sound with “golden harmonies and echoes of CSN&Y and Fleet Foxes”, and prompting The Word magazine to say “They’ve just made the record of their career by a country mile”, The Guardian described the album as a “revelation” whilst it went on to get 4**** reviews in Mojo, Uncut, Q, The Times, The Mirror and The Express.
The first time round, Dodgy were only together for seven years but in that time they sold over a million records worldwide, released three albums and enjoyed 12 Top 40 singles, including ‘Staying Out For The Summer’, ‘In A Room’, ‘If You’re Thinking Of Me’ and the Top 5 hit ‘Good Enough’ – still a staple of the radio playlists. They sold out the Brixton Academy for three nights in a row and were awarded an unprecedented 90-minute Saturday evening slot on the Pyramid stage at Glastonbury Festival in 1997 just before Radiohead. Not bad, considering that they also partied harder than an Ewok.
Since the release of ‘Stand Upright In A Cool Place’, the band haven’t really stopped as live gigs and festival appearances have always been a crucial part of the Dodgy experience, for many they are the perfect festival band. The band have performed at most festivals worth their salt, such as Bestival, Camp Bestival, V Festival, Glastonbury, Wychwood, Kendal Calling and many more across the UK and Europe.
‘What Are We Fighting For’ is set for release in late Summer with a full UK tour in the Autumn. Dodgy will play the new album in full for the first time on June 1st 2016 at The Convent near Stroud. The show will also be broadcast live on the internet around the world and will also mark the 20th anniversary of the band’s classic album ‘Free Peace Sweet’.
